Sendai through the year

Sendai has one festival you can build a trip around and several things that refuse to be scheduled. Knowing which is which is most of the planning.

August: Tanabata

Confirmed: 6 to 8 August 2026. The festival is fixed to those dates every year (Sendai Tanabata Matsuri organising committee, checked 2 August 2026), and Sendai City tourism lists the 2026 occurrence explicitly (Sendai Tourism, Convention and International Association).

It is not a parade. There is no procession and no timetable to catch. Enormous paper streamers hang from the arcade ceilings along Chuo-dori and Ichibancho, and the event is walking underneath them. Two consequences follow: it works in rain, because the arcades are roofed; and it is close to impossible to see calmly in the middle of the day. The official count for 2025 was about 2.11 million people across the three days (organising committee), on a handful of covered streets.

Early morning on the 6th, before the prize judging is announced that afternoon, is the quietest the decorations ever are.

The fireworks are the evening before. The 57th Sendai Tanabata Hanabi Matsuri runs 19:30 to 20:30 on 5 August 2026, around 16,000 shells, over the Hirose River and the Aobayama area (Sendai Junior Chamber, checked 2 August 2026). Different date, different organiser, different part of the city. Plan it as its own outing.

Spring: blossom, and why you cannot book it

The Japan Meteorological Agency stopped issuing bloom forecasts — it had done so since 1955 and handed the job to private forecasters — while continuing to observe. So there is official data on what happened and no official prediction of what will.

Its Sendai records make the problem concrete. Over the last six years, first bloom has fallen anywhere from 26 March to 8 April, and full bloom from 31 March to 11 April (JMA cherry blossom observations, checked 2 August 2026). In 2026 full bloom came on 4 April, nine days ahead of the 1991–2020 normal. That is a twelve-day spread on the single event most people schedule a Japan trip around.

The practical hedge is Tsutsujigaoka Park. Sendai City puts it at roughly 350 trees across 14 varieties, including weeping and late-flowering ones (City of Sendai, checked 2 August 2026) — which stretches the window at both ends, so a trip that misses the Somei-yoshino peak by a week can still land on something.

Nishi Park, the city’s oldest urban park, opened in 1875 and lights its blossom until 22:00 during the season, so an evening arrival is not a wasted one.

September: jazz on Jozenji-dori

Confirmed: 12 and 13 September 2026. The 35th Jozenji Street Jazz Festival, around forty stages a day across the city centre, free to attend, held rain or shine (festival association, checked 2 August 2026). For scale, 2025 drew 734 groups and about 620,000 visitors.

Stage times vary — most wrap around 17:30, some run to 20:00.

November: the zelkova turn

Jozenji-dori’s zelkova trees, more than sixty years old, typically peak in mid-November (Sendai Tourism, Convention and International Association, checked 2 August 2026). Zuihoden’s maples follow in the second half of the month. Out of town, Futakuchi Gorge starts from mid-October and Akiu Otaki around the end of it.

There is no official autumn-colour forecast either; the widely quoted one comes from a private weather company and does not publish for the coming season until around September.

Winter: the honest answer is nobody knows yet

This is the part of Sendai’s calendar we would most like to give you dates for and cannot.

The SENDAI Pageant of Starlight ran its 40th edition from 5 to 28 December 2025, lighting about 480,000 LEDs on 127 zelkova along Jozenji-dori (Pageant of Starlight, checked 2 August 2026). A second, newer, city-backed event — SENDAI Bright-Nights STORY — then ran on the same street from 19 January to 28 February 2026 (official site, checked 2 August 2026).

Neither has announced a next occurrence. As of 2 August 2026 the Pageant’s site still fronts the 2025 event. Anyone treating “the Sendai illumination” as a fixed December fixture may be planning around something that has changed shape. It is also a short, flat, walkable strip rather than a large ticketed display — easy to fold into an evening, hard to justify as the sole reason for a winter trip.

Winter: Zao’s snow monsters

The juhyo begin forming around late December and peak from late January into February (Yamagata Prefecture and Visit Yamagata, both checked 2 August 2026; the two put the end of the season at late February and early March respectively).

The season being open does not mean they are there. In 2025–26 the ropeway’s own night tours were cancelled for most of the two weeks either side of New Year because the formations had collapsed. The trees need a sustained run of the right wind and freezing fog, and one warm spell undoes weeks of build-up. Early to mid-February is the safest bet and late December the riskiest — and it is worth checking conditions the morning of, not the week before.

What we could not confirm

The official display hours for the Tanabata decorations are not published anywhere we could find; the organiser’s 2026 traffic-restriction map is the closest thing, and we could not read it reliably enough to quote.

The total number of zelkova on Jozenji-dori is not published by Sendai City — the 127 figure is the number lit for the illumination, which is not the same thing.

No 2026–27 winter dates exist yet for anything: the Pageant, Bright-Nights, the Zao bus, or the ropeway’s winter tours.
